The xmas ride was fantastic…30 riders dressed as various Christmas themes. Biggest turnout we have had at a ride yet. Got 20 new members which was excellent and what these events are all about.
The ride set off from Smithills Hall in Bolton and followed the start of the Pennine Bridleway Feeder route before going into the Forestry Commissions new £100k sand gallop (which is a km long and free to anyone) at Horrocks Community Forest in Smithills. The gallop was installed after lengthy negotiation between the Bridleway Assoc and the Community Forester Andy Glover.
The ride was marshalled by Smithills Park Ranger Richard Masters from Bolton Countryside Service and his volunteer rangers. Each member received a free rosette and the three fancy dress winners were given gift vouchers donated by Craine's Saddlery of Bolton who sponsor the majority of the associations events and mail shots - the prizes were presented by Chris Craine.
All had a fantastic ride and everyone survived the gallop at Horrocks' and emerged smiling!! All junior members were given reflective hat bands (as well as their rosettes) to keep them visible at night especially in winter. The association encourages all its members to wear high viz gear and got a £500 grant from Bolton council in 2002 which it spent on high viz gear which was given to all our members free of charge.
