Access Ride 18th May,2003 ( Page Under Construction ) What a great day was had by all. Thirty seven horses and riders arrived at Smithills Coaching House car park, which has been refurbished with mounting blocks and disabled rider ramps, to take part in our access ride. Rosettes and maps were issued at the beginning of the ride which was sponsored by the Countryside Agency to celebrate the opening of the Pennine Bridleway feeder route. The rain poured down but spirits refused to be dampened as the participants set off in groups of six. Volunteer Ranger Marshals cheerfully directed the riders along the route as the sun decided to put in its delayed appearance and the beautiful countryside was seen glistening on a spring day. Taking a circular route up onto the moors we left the traffic behind and enjoyed the peace and tranquillity that the area is famous for. No doubt we did disturb the peace slightly as the groups walked, trotted or cantered along the route partaking in relaxed chatter and good humoured banter. All the horses were on their very best behaviour and hopefully enjoying themselves as well, it would appear that they like to socialise as well as, if not more than, their owners. A very important event took place before the ride set off - the presentation to Richard Masters of the 'B.H.S Good Guy Award' for all the patient assistance he has given to the Bridleways Group over the last year. Once again, thank you Richard, we don't know how you put up with us! We hope to see everybody again on our future rides and at the next activity - our Treasure Hunt - in June. Many thanks for coming, next time be nice to all your friends and bring them along as well.
The photos of the ride will be added to this page as soon as they are available.
